Max-Kade-Haus

Overview

The Max-Kade-Haus is situated right next to the University of Applied Sciences and the Stadtmitte campus of the University of Stuttgart. Eight or nine people share a kitchen, whilst three share a shower and three share a toilet. The Max-Kade-Haus, built in 1953, was the first student accommodation block in Stuttgart. The high-rise residential block was built using the ‘Schüttbeton’ construction method developed in the post-war period, in which concrete is mixed with rubble from broken bricks, thereby recycling old building materials. The rooftop café, with its terrace and magnificent views, is particularly popular – the ideal venue for parties and a favourite meeting place. Thanks to the graffiti art in the stairwell, even climbing the 14 storeys is fun. Of course, there’s also a lift. The building is self-managed by the residents themselves, which means, amongst other things, that the students select their own flatmates through an application process.
