It was cold, crisp afternoon in Marburg. The kind of day where the air feels sharp and clear, and the streets are quiet except for the sound of your own footsteps. My friend and I decided to try ice skating for the first time , we were excited but a little nervous. Neither of us has never ice skated , and honestly, we have no idea what to expect. When we arrive, the first thing I notice is the price. Adults pay €6 for one hour on the ice, and renting skates costs €4. Unfortunately, there were no student discounts, but that doesn’t stop our excitement. The rink is cozy but busy, and just hearing the skates glide across the ice makes the place feel magical. For beginners, the rink provides little plastic animals to hold onto for balance. I pick a penguin and immediately feel a mix of relief and silliness, this tiny creature will be my lifeline.

Stepping onto the ice is terrifying. I clutch my penguin and grab the barrier, trying not to fall but unfortonatly I did. My friend does the same, and we wobble side by side, slipping and laughing every few seconds. The ice is far slipperier than I imagined. I thought I’d glide smoothly like in the videos I’ve seen online, but instead, I spend most of the time spinning, wobbling, and trying not to crash into other skaters. Every little movement feels tricky, but it’s also kind of funny. After about half an hour, something starts to click. I can take a few steps without holding my penguin all the time, and my friend is getting better too. I notice that falling isn’t as scary as I thought it’s just part of learning. Slowly, I start to move more confidently, gliding a little further each time. The rink doesn’t feel quite as intimidating anymore.

There’s also a small side rink where a group of kids are practicing skating with their parents. Some of them fall, some of them laugh, and some manage to glide gracefully. It’s funny, but also inspiring. I remind myself that everyone starts somewhere.By the end of the hour, I feel tired but exhilarated. My legs are sore from balancing and slipping, but I’m also grinning from ear to ear. What started as something scary has turned into one of the most fun and memorable afternoons I’ve had in a long time. My friend and I talk about how we can’t wait to come back. Maybe next time, we’ll try skating without the little plastic helpers or maybe we’ll just laugh our way through another hour, slipping and spinning just like today.
