Students in Germany have various opportunities to earn money while gaining practical experience related to their field of study.
One of the major benefits of being a student in Germany is the opportunity to earn money alongside your studies. You might be wondering how students can financially support themselves. Working in a café or restaurant is a common option, but it is far from the only one.
When I was a bachelor’s student in Japan, I worked part-time at a hotel reception. In Germany, students also have access to other valuable opportunities, such as Werkstudent positions or jobs as a research assistant (Studentische Hilfskraft). These options are especially attractive because they allow students to apply what they have learned in their studies directly to real work environments.
Working as a Werkstudent enables you to use your academic knowledge in practice and gain relevant professional experience. In many cases, these positions can even lead to long-term employment after graduation. Given that the current job market in Germany is quite competitive, this can be an effective and realistic pathway into full-time work.
In addition, universities, research institutes, and think tanks often look for student research assistants. I am currently working as a research assistant at Potsdam university myself, and this experience has shown me that working on research projects suits me well. It has also helped me clarify my career goals. After graduation, I would like to continue working in research.
Another important benefit is the sense of community. Through my research project, I have connected with colleagues and team members beyond local community. Building such networks is incredibly valuable, both professionally and personally. And of course, research assistant positions are paid, which helps with financial independence.
So, if you are a student or planning to study in Germany, keep in mind that there are many ways to earn money beyond local cafés or restaurants. Some student jobs allow you to apply your skills and knowledge from your studies while building meaningful connections between your academic and professional life.

Hi Joseph, If you are interested in finding a scholarship for studying or researching in Germany, the DAAD scholarship database is a helpful place to start 👉 http://www.funding-guide.de. Simply use the filter function on the left to choose your academic status (“Programmes for…”), your country of origin, and your subject area. This will show you only the scholarships that are suitable for your project. When you click on a programme title, you can read the announcement to learn about the details, such as application requirements, procedures and deadlines. Often, you will also find contact persons who can assist you with any particular questions. DAAD scholarships are mainly available for master’s courses, PhD programmes, or research stays in Germany. Unfortunately, DAAD does not offer scholarships for first-year students or for the full length of undergraduate courses, such as bachelor’s degrees or state examinations. You can find information about DAAD scholarships and other organisations’ programmes at 👉 http://www.funding-guide.de. It’s also a good idea to ask your chosen university about financial support packages.
