Budget-Friendly Trips to Nuremberg, Germany

Following up on my article A Half-Day Trip to Bamberg on a Student Budget, I’m excited to share another budget-friendly trip—this time to Nuremberg, just 45 minutes away from Bamberg by train! From Bamberg, you can take Regional-Express (RE19, RE28, RE29, or R14), and with the Deutschland Ticket, you can explore Nuremberg without any extra transport fees.

Why Visit Nuremberg?

Nuremberg is a top tourist destination! According to the Nuremberg Congress and Tourism Center, the city hit a record-breaking 3.8 million overnight stays in 2024, an 8.9% increase from 2023—far above the Germany-wide trend of 1.9%!

As a student, I take advantage of weekends and semester breaks to explore historical landmarks after stressful exams. If you’re looking for cost-free adventures, here are some must-visit spots!

Must-Visit Free Attractions in Nuremberg

🏰 Kaiserburg (The Imperial Castle)

A symbol of power and authority in the Holy Roman Empire, Kaiserburg is a must-see! Surrounded by charming streets, squares, and historic buildings, the castle offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city!

🏛️ Altes Rathaus (The Old Town Hall)

This Gothic masterpiece has been standing since 1332! The grand hall once hosted imperial receptions, while prisoners were tortured in the dungeons below before their trials. Today, you can visit the historic prison cells and enjoy music festivals in the main hall.

🏘️ Weißgerbergasse (Tanners‘ Lane)

Step back in time at Weißgerbergasse, the largest collection of old artisan houses in Nuremberg. These beautiful half-timbered houses often had their own wells and gardens, reflecting the prosperity of medieval leather craftsmen. Nowadays, it’s a vibrant street full of cafés, bars, and artisan shops—perfect for a stroll!
