A Student Weekend Trip to Stuttgart on a Budget

After a stressful exam week, I needed a break. So I grabbed my Deutschland Ticket, which I get as a student, and took the train from Gießen to Stuttgart ! The journey took about fIVE hours with three train changes via Deutsche Bahn’s RE30 line, but I didn’t mind it felt good to get out and explore somewhere new.

Stuttgart might be famous as the birthplace of Mercedes Benz and Porsche, but there’s so much more to it than fast cars. From quiet green corners perfect for a relaxed afternoon to stunning architecture and lively student hangouts, the city has a welcoming, laid back vibe. It’s the kind of place you can explore at your own pace — and it’s even better when getting around doesn’t cost you a thing!

🔥 Feuersee

Feuersee is this quiet little lake tucked away in Stuttgart West, and it ended up being one of the most peaceful places I visited. Surrounded by tall, old trees and a few benches, it has this calm, almost hidden vibe like a little escape in the middle of the city. The highlight is definitely the Johanneskirche, a beautiful old church that sits right at the edge of the lake. Seeing it reflected in the water was honestly kind of magical. It’s the kind of spot where you just want to sit for a while, take a deep breath, and slow down.

🏛 Schlossplatz

The heart of Stuttgart! always full of life. There were musicians playing, people sitting on the grass, tourists walking around, and locals just doing their thing. The buildings around the square are huge and impressive, and the whole place feels open and lively. I grabbed an ice cream and just walked around for a bit — perfect spot to hang out and take it all in.

A Spontaneous Moment in Stuttgart

A street photographer came up to me, said I looked beautiful, and asked if he could take my picture. At first, I was surprised and happy at the same time I didn’t expect that at all. But since I love photography and had often joked with my friend about when a street photographer might approach me (since I see so many of those videos on Instagram), I said yes. It turned into a spontaneous mini photoshoot It was such a kind, artistic moment that made me feel seen and confident. Now, I have a few lovely portraits from that day ,  a memory I’ll never forget.

Stuttgart at night

Honestly, it’s incredible. This picture was taken from the balcony at night. The lights were just amazing , everything looked so vibrant and peaceful all at once. It’s one of those moments where the view feels like a perfect snapshot of the city’s energy after dark.

Final Thoughts

Stuttgart was really  calming, beautiful, and full of little moments that made me feel lucky to be studying in Germany. With my Deutschland Ticket covering all my transport, it was also incredibly affordable.

If you’re planning your next student getaway, I totally recommend this city  especially for a weekend. And who knows? Maybe you’ll walk away with your own unexpected photoshoot too. 😉
